Our January Lecture is:
‘From Skibbereen to the Moon: Agnes Clerke and 19th Century Astronomy’ by Finola Finlay.

Agnes Mary Clerke (1842-1907) was born and brought up in Skibbereen and lived through the Famine. Educated at home and in libraries in Dublin and Italy, she launched her writing career in 1873 with an eclectic series of articles for the Edinburgh Review. But it was the publication of A Popular History of Astronomy in the Nineteenth Century that established her as a serious and influential voice in the emerging field of astrophysics. She wrote several more books, was consulted by the leading astronomers of the day and eventually made an honorary member of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Finola Finlay writes the popular arts and culture blog, Roaringwater Journal. With degrees in history and archaeology and a background in higher education, she is happily spending retirement researching and writing, mostly about West Cork.
