Skibbereen Dynamos AFC in the 1970s

Soccer-1-reduced
Remember when … Skibbereen Soccer Club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017, having been founded in 1967. We came across this photograph recently and it stirred some memories. In the late 1970s the Soccer Club ran a series of seven-a-side tournaments, the matches being played in the Brothers’ Field. The tournaments were organised by the late Joe Cottom and his bother Richie, who died in December 2017. This photo of one of those seven-a-side teams is, we think, from either 1978 or 1979. Included are, back, from left, Ronnie Carthy, Mick McInerney, John O’Donovan and the late Karl Swanton. Front, from left, Gerard O’Brien, Philip O’Regan, Kieran O’Sullivan and Frank Swanton.

Skibbereen Horse Fair

Skibbereen Horse Fair
This photo is of the annual Horse Fair which was held in Skibbereen each year on August 20th. It was once a very busy day in Skibbereen. It’s interesting to note that Mardyke House was still there in this photo. The landscape has changed dramatically here in the past while, with the new Aldi store now filling in a large part of this space. Can you help us date this photo?

Skibbereen PTAA members in the mid-1970s

Skibbereen PTAA from the mid-1970s
THE year 2017 represents a very significant milestone in the history of the Temperance Movement in Skibbereen. Two-hundred years ago the first Temperance Society in Ireland and Europe was founded in Skibbereen. Skibbereen & District Historical Society has published a few posts on its website to mark the occasion. The Society has been given a few photographs which, we are sure, will be of great general interest to Skibbereen people at home and abroad. The above photo from the mid-1970s is of members of the Skibbereen Pioneer Total Abstinence Association having been presented with certificates to mark twenty-five years membership of the Pioneers. We know some of those in the picture, but not all. Can you help us? If you can name those or some of those in the photo please email us using the reply facility below.

Skibbereen PTAA picture: The man standing in the middle of the back row (5th from left) is James O’Sullivan, Bluid, Castlehaven. James farmed in Bluid until he suffered a stroke in 1986 at which point he moved to live with his daughter, Eileen Daly, Church Cross. We all remember James as a very hard-working, generous and kind man who loved company and who devoted himself to the care of his wife, Dotie, who suffered illness throughout her later years. He died in 1993 and is buried in Castlehaven new cemetery.
