Of the numerous men and women from Skibbereen and district who served on the front line during the Great War of 1914 to 1918 many suffered from physical wounds, psychological damage or died in the line of duty. This database lists the over 200 from this area who paid the ultimate sacrifice and never returned home to their loved ones.

Information on how this database was compiled is documented at the bottom of this page.
The Search function allows you to filter the data on the name of those who died.

This database is built on the list of World War 1 causalities compiled by John Cahalane and published in his article ‘World War 1 Casualty Roll from Skibbereen and District’, Skibbereen Historical Journal Vol. 10 (2014). This data has since been updated and added to by local historian William Casey. The primary sources of data included The Great Sacrifice: Cork servicemen who died in the Great War (Cork, 2010), data recorded by Commonwealth Grave Commission (https://www.cwgc.org/) and information obtained from local newspapers, principally the Skibbereen Eagle, the Southern Star and the Cork Examiner.
More recently two websites have proved invaluable in updated and verifying this database. These are:
Irish Doughboys – Irish Born Casualties of the US Armed Forces 1917-1919 compiled by Dennis Burke.
The Irish Great War Dead Archive complied by military historian Tom Burnell and hosted by Tipperary County Council Library Services.

Skibbereen & District Historical Society is grateful to everyone who helped compile this list and if you have any information that can be added to this database please reach out to us via our Contact Us page.
