January 2025 Lecture

14/01/2025 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Our January Lecture is:
‘1588, The Surprising Survival of the Spanish Armada’ by Michael B. Barry.

Contrary to widespread belief, the Spanish Armada, while it failed in its invasion objective, was not defeated – around two-thirds of the fleet managed to sail back to Spain. The main losses were in Ireland, where exceptionally severe storms wrecked 24 of the ships making their return journey. In his illustrated talk, author Michael B. Barry dispels some myths and brings to life the full story of the Spanish Armada.

Historian Michael B. Barry, originally from Ballydehob, studied in Trinity College and lives in Dublin. He has written many books including the best-selling Victorian Dublin Revealed and Homage to al-Andalus, the Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain. In recent years he has written many critically acclaimed books on the Irish Revolution. His 1588, the Spanish Armada and the 24 Ships Lost on Ireland’s Shores is a bestseller and has been shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards 2024.

All welcome, small charge for non-members.
