October 2024 Lecture

23 October @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Our October Lecture is:
‘Just the Life of an Anglo-Irish Wife’ by Rachel Finnegan.

This talk outlines the life of Judith Isobel Chavasse, née Fleming (1867-1935), who was born in Goleen, brought up in New Court, Skibbereen, and after spending the first 15 years of her marriage in Whitfield Court, Co. Waterford, returned to West Cork, where she lived the remaining 22 years of her life in Seafield House, Castletownshend, with her husband, Henry (Hal) Chavasse, and her four sons. The story of Judith’s life is told through a large collection of diaries that she kept from the age of 23 and three memoirs related to the houses in which she grew up.

Dr Rachel Finnegan was a lecturer in Irish Tourism and Heritage Studies at SETU (formerly Waterford Institute of Technology) from 1995-2015 and has published widely on grand tourists and explorers from Ireland to the Eastern Mediterranean in the 18th century. In July of this year she published The Memoirs and Diaries of Judith Isobel Chavasse: An Account of Life in West Cork and Waterford (1867-1935) on which this talk is based.
