Our November Lecture is:
Creameries in the barony of West Carbery before Drinagh Coop
By Proinnsias Breathnach
Department of Geography, Maynooth University
In the decades following the introduction of the creamery system to Ireland in the early 1880s, an extraordinary density of creameries emerged in the barony of West Carbery, centred on Skibbereen. Prior to the establishment of Drinagh Coop in 1923, no less than 47 known creameries started up in the region. And, while creameries nowadays are commonly associated with cooperatives, all of these creameries were privately-owned except for one, short-lived, exception. This illustrated talk gives a detailed account of the growth, and eventual decline, of these little-known creameries which, at one stage, dominated the dairy industry in West Carbery but which had completely disappeared by 1945.
This lecture take place in the O’Donovan Rossa GAA Pavilion, Skibbereen on Wednesday 29 November 2023 @ 8pm.
All are welcome, small fee for non-members.
